WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
*HYMN #467 (Presbyterian Hymnal) "HOW GREAT THOU ART"
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of mercy, hear us as we confess
our sin. Power beguiles us and we deem ourselves worthy.
Our good works convince us that we can assure our
salvation. We heap treasures about us as signs of merit
and status, then build elaborate defenses to keep our
prizes secure. Forgive the illusion of our own greatness,
and in Christ humble us to receive your reward. Amen.
*ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
*RESPONSE: GLORIA PATRI
Glory be to the Father, and to the
Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is
now, and ever shall be, World without end. Amen, Amen.

February 12
This is a very special day to many
Americans. It is Lincoln’s birthday. Honest Abe was born
in 1809 in Kentucky. And if you come further south you may
be observing Georgia Day on this day, the anniversary of
the landing of James Oglethorpe in what is now Savannah,
Georgia. If you are of Polish descent, you probably know
that it is Kosciusko Day, marking the birth, in 1746, of a
Polish patriot who fought in the American Revolutionary
War. Many older miners remember this day as the birthday,
in 1880, of the man who built the United Mineworkers
union, John L. Lewis.
For many Americans, there is a special
warmth about this day because it is the birthday of a man
named Omar N. Bradley, General Omar N. Bradley, who was
known as the G. I.’s general in World War II. Born in
Missouri in 1893, he turned out to be one of the nation’s
most loved as well as longest lived top generals, and a
plain and gentle man. If we are looking for the model of a
dedicated servant, we don’t have to look beyond Omar
Bradley. Quoted here is something he said in an Armistice
Day speech in 1948: "…humanity is in danger of being
trapped in this world by its moral adolescents."
