Springwood Presbyterian Church Cemetery

Springwood Presbyterian Church and its
cemetery are located at 6998 Springwood Church Road. They
are in Guilford County, but just a stone’s throw from the
Alamance County line. Large well-kept farms are all
around, but fast-moving traffic on nearby I 85 – I 40 can
be heard clearly, providing a reminder of the past with a
glimpse of the future.
An iron fence with a lovely entrance
gate encloses the cemetery. Tombstone readings were done
in August 2002, beginning at the west side nearest the
church. The graves were read by the row, with north or
south locations determined by a drive that runs near the
center of the cemetery. Some of the church founders have
been honored by a monument placed near the church, not
within the fence. Names from the monument, as well as some
from tombstones outside the fence, are included in this
listing. Most of the stones are legible, but it appears
that some graves are not marked. Members of the church
remember old stones being in areas where only grass grows
today.
History from other sources has been
added, and it is hoped that it will be helpful. Rev. G. W.
Welker, D.D., married, baptized and confirmed many of the
members at Brick Church who later came to Springwood.
Using his records, court house and Bible entries, as well
as personal interviews, many parents and spouses have been
identified by the author.
